Care guide

How to care for stoneware

Short answer: Hand wash, avoid sudden temperature changes, and dry pieces upside down. Handmade stoneware cared for this way lasts for generations.

Why stoneware needs a little care

Stoneware is fired at high temperatures, which makes it dense and durable. But handmade glazes vary, and small habits keep each piece looking its best for decades.

Five habits for long-lasting ceramics

  1. Hand wash when you can. Dishwasher detergents slowly dull matte glazes.
  2. Avoid thermal shock. Do not move a piece from the fridge straight into a hot oven.
  3. Dry upside down. Unglazed foot rings can absorb water; let them air dry.
  4. Use felt pads. They protect both your vase and your table.
  5. Remove stains gently. A paste of baking soda and water lifts tea and coffee marks.
A small chip on the foot ring is a sign of a well-loved piece, not a broken one.

Is handmade stoneware food safe?

Yes. All of our makers use lead-free, food-safe glazes on any surface that touches food. Decorative vases are watertight but not intended for food.
